# Indian GST Calculator

Calculate CGST, SGST/UTGST, and IGST for intra-state or inter-state supplies. Enter an amount, pick inclusive or exclusive GST, select a rate slab, and get an instant tax breakdown.

## How to use the Indian GST calculator

1. Enter the amount in rupees (₹).
2. Choose whether the amount is exclusive or inclusive of GST.
3. Select a GST rate (5%, 18%, 28%, or 40% for cess-heavy goods).
4. Pick supply type: Intra-state splits tax into CGST + SGST/UTGST; Inter-state applies full IGST.
5. Click Calculate to see a receipt-style breakdown on the right.

## CGST, SGST, UTGST, and IGST explained

India runs a dual GST model. Sell something **intra-state** (buyer and seller in the same state or union territory) and the tax splits evenly between the centre and the state:

- CGST (Central GST), which the central government collects
- SGST (State GST), or UTGST in union territories, which the state or UT collects

Cross a state border, though, and the full rate applies as **IGST** (Integrated GST) instead, which gets apportioned between the centre and the consuming state further down the line.

### Intra-state formulas

### Inter-state formula

### Worked example : ₹1,000 at 5% intra-state (exclusive)

Taxable value = **₹1,000**. Total GST = ₹50. **CGST = ₹25**, **SGST/UTGST = ₹25**, **IGST = ₹0**. Total inclusive = **₹1,050**.

### Worked example : ₹1,000 at 5% inter-state (exclusive)

Taxable value = **₹1,000**. **IGST = ₹50**. CGST and SGST are zero on inter-state invoices at source. Total inclusive = **₹1,050**.

## GST inclusive vs exclusive amounts

If your invoice total already has GST baked in, select **Inclusive of GST** and the calculator works backward to find the taxable value, the same reverse formula we walk through in our [GST calculator guide](https://shoutingnow.com/blog/gst-calculator-guide/). Need a fixed 5% slab without the CGST/SGST split? The [5% GST Calculator](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/5-percent-gst-calculator/) handles that.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
**CGST** and **SGST/UTGST** both apply on *intra-state* sales, and each one covers half the total GST rate. **IGST** applies on *inter-state* sales at the full rate instead. This calculator splits things out automatically once you tell it the supply type.

### When should I select intra-state vs inter-state?
Go with **intra-state** when supplier and buyer sit in the same state or UT. Pick **inter-state** once goods or services cross a state border, that's when IGST applies on the invoice instead.

### What are the current GST rates in India?
The common slabs run **5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%**, with special rates at 0.25%, 1.5%, and 3% for a handful of categories, plus a **40%** rate where compensation cess kicks in. This calculator quick-picks 5%, 18%, 28%, and 40% since those cover most everyday cases.

### How do I calculate GST on an inclusive price?
Select **Inclusive of GST**, enter the total, choose your rate and supply type, then hit Calculate. Under the hood, taxable value = Total ÷ (1 + rate/100), and CGST/SGST or IGST follows from there.

### Why is SGST labeled SGST/UTGST?
Most states levy **SGST**, but union territories without their own legislature levy **UTGST** instead. Functionally they're the same, both are the state-share component equal to CGST on intra-state supplies.

### Is this Indian GST calculator official for GSTR filing?
No, it's built for estimates, invoicing practice, and learning the mechanics. File your actual returns through the GST portal and lean on a chartered accountant for compliance questions. Our [GST calculator guide](https://shoutingnow.com/blog/gst-calculator-guide/) has more background too.

### What does the 40% GST rate mean?
That 40% figure usually reflects **28% GST plus 12% compensation cess** on specified luxury and sin goods, think certain automobiles or tobacco. Always double-check the applicable cess for your specific HSN/SAC code before relying on it.
