# Sitemap Link Counter

Count every URL in an XML sitemap or sitemap index in a matter of seconds. Enter your sitemap URL, review the total plus a per-child breakdown, then open the full list and copy every link at once, free, no signup required.

Want a deeper walkthrough of sitemap indexes, WordPress’s /wp-sitemap.xml, and SEO checks in general? Our [Sitemap Link Counter guide](https://shoutingnow.com/blog/sitemap-link-counter-guide/) pairs with this [free Sitemap Link Counter](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/sitemap-link-counter/) and covers how to audit totals, spot missing sections, and export the URL list.

## What this tool does

A **sitemap** is an XML file listing the pages you want search engines to find. A plain urlset lists page URLs directly, while a **sitemap index** points to several child sitemaps covering posts, pages, custom types, or taxonomies. Counting those links by hand is slow and easy to get wrong, especially on WordPress sites where the core sitemap splits into a pile of files.

This counter fetches your public sitemap, follows any nested index files, adds up every <loc>, and lets you open the full list with a one-click **Copy all**. Nothing sticks around on ShoutingNow once the request finishes.

## How to count sitemap links

1. Paste your sitemap URL: typically https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml or https://yoursite.com/wp-sitemap.xml.
2. Click Count links: we fetch the XML server-side (so CORS does not block you) and parse urlset or sitemapindex roots.
3. Review the total: see Total URLs plus a breakdown by child sitemap when you submitted an index.
4. Open View list: scroll the full URL list, then use Copy all to put every link on your clipboard in one go.
5. Optional: expand “Paste sitemap XML” if the URL cannot be fetched from your network and count from raw XML instead.

## What gets counted

Sitemap type
What we count
Notes

URL set (urlset)
Every <loc> under <url>
Standard page / image / video sitemaps that list locations.

Sitemap index
Sum of locs across child sitemaps
Child files are followed recursively (with safe depth and size limits).

WordPress core sitemap
Posts, pages, CPTs, taxonomies, users
Works with /wp-sitemap.xml and its child XML files.

Gzipped sitemaps
Same as uncompressed
Supported when the response is gzip or the URL ends in .xml.gz.

## When a sitemap counter helps

- SEO audits: confirm Google Search Console coverage matches what you publish.
- Migration checks: compare URL counts before and after a CMS move.
- Content inventory: export every loc for spreadsheets, QA, or internal linking reviews.
- Debugging indexes: spot a child sitemap that returns zero or errors while others look fine.

## Tips for accurate counts

- Prefer the index URL when your site splits sitemaps, counting only one child undercounts the site.
- If a host blocks remote fetches, paste the XML from your browser’s View Source and use Count pasted XML.
- Very large indexes may truncate the printable list for performance; the total still reflects every URL counted within safe limits.
- Private or localhost URLs cannot be fetched from our servers (SSRF protection).

## Privacy and disclaimer

We only request your public sitemap long enough to count it and return the list for your session, and ShoutingNow keeps no permanent copy of your URLs afterward. Counts reflect whatever the sitemap actually exposes, so a page missing from the sitemap will not show up here either. Always verify anything SEO-critical in Search Console and your own CMS.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a sitemap link counter?
It reads an XML sitemap, or a sitemap index, pulls out every <loc> URL, and reports the total. Our [Sitemap Link Counter](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/sitemap-link-counter/) goes a step further with a per-child breakdown and a way to copy the full list.

### Can this tool count links in a sitemap index?
Yes, paste in the index URL, WordPress's /wp-sitemap.xml for example, and the tool detects nested sitemaps, follows each one, and sums every page URL across the whole tree.

### How do I view and copy all sitemap URLs?
Once counting finishes, click **View list** to open the full URL list, then use **Copy all** in the results card or inside the modal to get every link onto your clipboard at once.

### Does the sitemap counter support gzipped sitemaps?
It does, as long as the server returns gzip encoding or the file ends in .xml.gz. If decompression fails, try the uncompressed .xml URL instead, or paste the XML in manually.

### Is the Sitemap Link Counter free?
Completely free, no account needed. Enter a public sitemap URL, review the totals, and export the list. For workflow tips, check the [sitemap counting guide](https://shoutingnow.com/blog/sitemap-link-counter-guide/).

### Why did my sitemap fail to load?
Usually because the URL is not actually public, the host is blocking remote requests, or the file is not valid XML. Try pasting the XML into the optional field, or first confirm the sitemap opens fine in your own browser.
