# CBM Calculator

Enter the length, width, and height of a box in cm, inches, meters, or feet, and this tool works out cubic meters (CBM), cubic feet, and air-freight volumetric weight for however many units you're shipping.

## Using this CBM calculator

CBM, short for cubic meters, is the standard volume unit behind freight quotes, warehouse planning, and container loading. Enter the length, width, and height of a box or pallet, pick your unit (centimeters, inches, meters, or feet), set a quantity if you’re shipping more than one, and click **Calculate**. You’ll get total CBM, cubic feet, and the volumetric weight that many carriers use for air and express shipments.

1. Pick a unit: cm by default, or in, m, or feet. Feet mode also adds optional inch fields for each dimension.
2. Enter dimensions: length, width, and height of one unit, whether that’s a box, crate, or pallet.
3. Set quantity: how many identical units you’re shipping (defaults to 1).
4. Optional weight: enter the actual weight per unit in kg or lb so you can compare it against volumetric weight.
5. Read results: CBM, cubic feet, volumetric weight, and a chargeable weight once you’ve entered actual weight.

## How to calculate CBM

Start by converting each dimension to **meters**, then multiply length × width × height to get the volume of one unit. Multiply that by quantity to land on the total shipment volume.

A few quick reference conversions:

- Centimeters to meters: divide by 100 (100 cm = 1 m)
- Inches to meters: multiply by 0.0254 (the exact definition)
- Feet and inches to meters: convert everything to total feet first, then multiply by 0.3048

Say a carton measures 100 cm × 50 cm × 40 cm; that gives you 0.1 × 0.5 × 0.4, or **0.2 CBM**. Need to convert other units entirely? Our [Conversion Calculator](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/conversion-calculator/) can help.

## What is volumetric weight?

Light but bulky cargo still eats up space in a truck, plane, or container, so carriers bill you for whichever is greater: **actual weight** or **volumetric (dimensional) weight**. For air freight, a common divisor is 6000 when your dimensions are in centimeters:

Take that same 100 × 50 × 40 cm box: (100 × 50 × 40) ÷ 6000 works out to **33.33 kg**. Even if the box actually weighs only 20 kg, the carrier bills the higher 33.33 kg figure. Divisors shift by mode and carrier, some express services use 5000, and road freight in certain regions uses 4000, so it’s worth confirming with your forwarder.

## Cubic feet from CBM

US warehouse and trucking quotes tend to run in cubic feet instead. Multiply CBM by 35.3147 to get there:

**0.2 CBM × 35.3147 ≈ 7.06 ft³**

The calculator spits out both units automatically, so you can compare ocean, air, and domestic quotes side by side without re-entering your dimensions each time.

## 20ft and 40ft container capacities

A container’s *nominal* volume always outpaces its usable cargo space, thanks to door height, packaging gaps, and irregular shapes. For practical planning, expect roughly:

Container typeInternal length (approx.)Usable CBM (planning)

20ft standard5.9 m28 to 33 CBM
40ft standard12.0 m58 to 67 CBM
40ft high cube12.0 m (taller)68 to 76 CBM

Stack identical cartons with a known CBM to estimate how many will fit, and leave some margin for dunnage, pallets, and loading access. Got mixed cargo? Sum each SKU’s CBM from this tool to get a total.

## Trailer and LTL volume

A typical 53 ft dry van trailer offers roughly **100 to 110 CBM** of usable space, depending on deck height and pallet configuration, shorter in linear length than a 40ft high-cube ocean container, but comparable for palletized freight. Less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers apply their own dimensional weight rules too, so knowing your CBM upfront makes it easier to compare LTL against full-truckload (FTL) options.

## When CBM matters

Use caseWhy CBM helps

Ocean FCL/LCL quotesFreight rates get quoted per CBM or per container, so accurate volume keeps you from getting re-billed.
Air & expressVolumetric weight frequently runs higher than actual weight on bulky goods.
WarehousingStorage fees can be charged per pallet position or per cubic meter stored.
Import duty estimatesSome tariffs reference volume directly, or combine weight and volume tests.
Project planningSum up material CBM before ordering containers or scheduling deliveries.

Pair this tool with the [Age Calculator](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/age-calculator/) to count days between order and ship dates. For unit conversions outside of CBM, the [Conversion Calculator](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/conversion-calculator/) covers length and weight.

## Examples and use cases

### Case study: LCL ocean freight

An importer ships 24 cartons at 0.2 CBM each (100 × 50 × 40 cm), which adds up to **4.8 CBM** total. The forwarder quotes $85 per CBM for LCL, roughly $408 in freight versus paying for a full 20ft container minimum. Summing CBM per SKU like this keeps you from over-ordering container space.

### Real-world use cases

- Air vs ocean: a lightweight electronics shipment weighs 80 kg on the scale, but volumetric weight comes out to 120 kg, so the carrier bills the higher number.
- Warehouse storage: a 3PL charges per CBM stored, so this tool totals up palletized inventory before anyone signs a contract.
- E-commerce packaging: a seller right-sizes cartons to shrink CBM and cut down on dimensional shipping surcharges.

## Accuracy and limitations

These results assume rectangular boxes with uniform dimensions, so odd shapes, void fill, and non-stackable items all need some extra allowance. Carrier divisors, rounding rules, and minimum charges vary too, so treat volumetric weight as an estimate until your forwarder confirms the real number. This tool runs entirely in your browser for planning and education; check critical shipments with your logistics provider before committing.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I calculate CBM from box dimensions?
Convert length, width, and height to meters, multiply the three together, then multiply by quantity. A 100 cm × 50 cm × 40 cm box comes to 0.2 CBM. Our [CBM Calculator](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/cubic-meters-calculator/) converts the units for you automatically.

### What is the formula for cubic meters?
CBM equals length (m) times width (m) times height (m) times quantity, with every dimension already in meters before you multiply. The calculator accepts cm, inches, meters, or feet and converts them behind the scenes.

### How is volumetric weight calculated for shipping?
With dimensions in centimeters, volumetric weight (kg) equals (L × W × H × quantity) divided by 6000. Carriers bill whichever is greater, actual weight or volumetric weight, so enter your optional weight in the [CBM Calculator](https://shoutingnow.com/tools/cubic-meters-calculator/) to see which one applies.

### How many CBM fit in a 20ft or 40ft container?
As rough planning figures: about 28 to 33 CBM in a 20ft standard container, 58 to 67 CBM in a 40ft standard, and up to roughly 76 CBM in a 40ft high cube. Actual usable space runs below the nominal volume once pallets and loading gaps are accounted for.

### How do I convert CBM to cubic feet?
Multiply cubic meters by 35.3147, so 0.2 CBM comes to about 7.06 ft³. The calculator shows both figures the moment you click Calculate.

### Can I enter dimensions in feet and inches?
You can. Select **feet** as the unit, then enter feet in the main field and inches in the sub-field for each dimension, and the tool converts everything to meters and centimeters internally.
